GUINEVERE - 30 days of Arthurian Characters Development

Have you ever written about her?

Hmmm… Not a lot. I’d like to, she’s a good character. Years ago I planned to write about King Arthur focusing on three female characters… I only could write the plot, and two or three chapters. Guinevere was in the plot’s summary, but I couldn’t put her in those first chapters because she was not a main character… YET.

If you could write a perfect arthurian novel about them what would be their story arc?

She would show up a brief time after her wedding. I think she would evolute from a shy, afraid girl who has to conspire in the shadows to have an influence on her husband to a powerful woman who plays the Power Game not as a secondary character, but as a main one (maybe she learned this from Morgan)… Tthis power made her an imprudent woman ad their enemies discovered her affair with Lancelot. She starts sleeping with Lancelot because she knows Arthur has a son by his sister (Morgan? Morgause? Both possibilities could make great versions!) and Lancelot is there, a good, handsome man. After Arthur’s death she retired to a convent, full of regret.

What point in their life would you set the story?

When she’s told she’s going to marry Arthur and she is scorted to Camelot, BUT NOT BY LANCELOT because Lancelot arrives 1 or 2 years after her.

Are they more suited for a pre- or post-Camlann story?

Pre. I think I’m not very interested on Post-Camlann stories, the perfect ending for an arthurian story is Arthur’s death in Avalon. Well… I would write a short story about Guinevere’s last interview with Lancelot… And a last encounter with Morgan. Both women reconcile and pardon every bad thing they did to each other. Guinevere dies few days later, and three Fairy Queens appear to bring her corpse to Avalon, with Arthur…

Which characters would you ship them with in the story?

ARTHUR - He was her first love, a love at first sight. She loved him because he was handsome and kind, but also for all he represented: freedom, justice, power, honour… Their relationship became cold and distant, specially after Mordred came to court, but she always loved him.

LANCELOT - He represents the atraction of novelty, Guinevere felt that she could tell him about her fears, doubts and problems in a much more suitable way than when she was with Arthur, but they never, NEVER had sex. She refused to talk to him after Elaine’s pregnancy, and he abandoned Camelot. He returned 5-8 years later, and he was still the most handsome among Camelot’s Knights. But Guinevere has changed. She has turned into a brave, indpendent woman, and, now, SHE. WANTS. SEX. (Sex, but with a lot of love of course). The queen’s heart is divided between these brave, outstanding men.

ELAINE: OK, let me explain. She’s NOT in love with Elaine, but I always have imagined that on Elaine’s wedding day Guinevere had a nervous crisis and, when she was alone with the bride, she noticed that Elaine smelled like Lancelot. “You smell like him” said the Queen, and she kissed Elaine. She was becoming mad because that night Elaine would have what she would never have (she would have sex with Lancelot). But they’re not in love.

What would be their relationships with other characters?

1-Arthur: I’ve written about their relationship in the previous point.

2-Lancelot: I’ve written about their relationship in the previous point.

3-Merlin: She’s afraid of him because she knows he hates her for unknown reasons. She doesn’t trust him because she’s a christian and he’s a druid/wizard.

4-Morgan: At the beginning, they were very good friends, Morgan being the most important lady of her household. But Guinevere wanted an impeccable reputation for her ladies, and some women (jealous of Morgan’s position) told the Queen about Morgan’s flirtation with pagan witchcraft and with Guiomar (Guinevere’s cousin) and Morgan is banished from court. Morgan’s love and respect will turn into a ruthless hatred.

5-Morgawse: Guinevere thinks she’s better than Morgan as a person, but she’s always in Lothian, so they don’t have an intimate relationship.

6-Mordred: He’s kind to her, and she wants to love him, but he’s the son another woman gave to Arthur. She has mixed feelings.

7-Galahad: The same as with Mordred.

8-Elaine: They were good friends until Elaine got pregnant.

9-Gwenhyfach. She’s Guinever half-sister, they hate each other. It’s a pity I don’t know a lot about Gwenhyfach

What’s the most crack storyline you’d like to see this sort of character star in?

Mmm… I don’t know… Sometimes I imagine her being raped by Mordred. I read somewhere that Celts believed that the man who had the Queen, had the Land (I can’t remember if it was Lawhead or Zimmer Bradley). And we know that Mordred WANTED the land…

Another crack storyline: Merlin discovered her affair with Lancelot while Arthur was fighting the Saxons. After Arthur’s arrival, the Queen convinces the Lady of The Lake to trap Merlin in the cave, because, all in all, Lancelot is the Lady’s son… And mothers do ALL for their sons.

After re-reading it it seems that I hate Katherine of Aragon, but I like her. What I mean is that this family wasn’t as happy as it seemed. Henry betrayed Katherine several times, and when he started pursuing Anne he thought it would be another “ordinary treason”… But Anne was different, everybody knows it.

And I really hate when people put the blame on Anne only because she was different. She wasn’t submissive and she didn’t wanted to be used and discarded like a Kleenex. By 1520 Henry was thinking about the legality of his marriage and Anne didn’t broke this family, she just accelerated the process

I think Lady Rochford is sometimes over-vilified as a jealous sister in law, but I read somewher that she plotted with Anne Boleyn to banish one of Henry’s mistresses from court, and it is said that queen Anne told Jane about her husband’s “sexual problems”.

I really think she was manipulated by her time, her court, (maybe) her king and (probably in Katherine Howard’s issue) her family in law

I think it would be interesting to see a book about King Arthur written by PG. I don’t like when she tries to sell fiction as a fact, but she has a narrative gift and she is able to create a solid atmosphere.

Rose can change from pretty to plain, I read in Wikipedia that she is a very creative woman, so, if there was a movie of “Boleyn Inheritance”, she could give Anne of Cleves a shy nature who, softly, turns into a more complex and self-confident personality. Anne was the woman who shook Henry’s court, who changed Europe’s History and who made policy in a way that women weren’t allowed: not as a secondary character but as a main one.

Anne’s strength shaped England’s future. If she hadn’t been so strong, Henry would have been married to Katherine until death, and we wouldn’t be here, discussing Henry’s six wives… So, if she’s not the main focus of the Tudor England, she is (at least) one of the most important characters of that era.
